Outlaws edge Hannibal to win third straight

The Nashville Outlaws edged Hannibal, 5-4 at Hawkins Field on Monday night to win its third straight game. With the win, Nashville returned to .500 on the season with an 8-8 record through its first 16 games.

The Outlaws trailed 3-1 heading into the home half of the sixth before plating three runs on three hits to take a 4-3 lead.

After both teams went scoreless in the seventh frame, Hannibal would then tie the game at four in the top of the eighth.

The Outlaws bounced right back in the eighth with a run of their own when Kevin Smith (LSU Shreveport) scored on an RBI-single by Doug Joyce (Florida International) to give the Outlaws a 5-4 lead.

Reliever Jon Ivie (Belmont) threw the seventh and eighth inning for Nashville to earn the win. Ivie (1-0) struck out two and allowed one hit in two-innings of scoreless relief on Monday, running his scoreless innings streak to nine.

Nashville starter Austin Bridgewater (Carson-Newman) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings with four strikeouts and three walks in the no-decision.

Greg Bachman (Austin Peay) reached base three out of four times (two hits) while Ryan Emery (Arkansas State) went 2-for-2 with a RBI and run scored.

The Outlaws will play game two of a two-game series against Hannibal on Tuesday night at Hawkins Field. First pitch is slated to be at 7:05 p.m. CT.

Tuesday night will mark the season debut for Vanderbilt’s Bryan Johns. Johns is coming off a strong season for the Commodores in 2010, hitting .370 with 13 doubles and a .479 on-base percentage.
