Trailing 5-0 after the first inning, the Nashville Outlaws stormed back with a seven-run, seven-hit third inning to take an 8-6 lead and held on for a 12-9 win against Quincy at Hawkins Field on Tuesday evening.
Tuesday’s game was highlighted by Johnny Amann’s two third-inning triples. Amann became the first player in the Prospect League's history to record two triples in the same inning.
According to Baseball-Almanac, there have only been 11 players in professional baseball to record two triples in the same inning. The last player to accomplish the rare feat was Cory Sullivan of the Colorado Rockies who tripled twice in the same inning against the San Diego Padres on April 9, 2006.
Nashville trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom half of the third inning before sending 11 hitters to the plate in the seven-run inning. The first three hits of the inning went for extra bases. Amann led off the inning with a triple to deep center and then came into score on Bryan Johns (Vanderbilt) RBI-double. Doug Joyce (Florida International) then drove in Johns from second with a double down the left field line to make it a 6-3 game in favor of Quincy. Following a strikeout and a ground out, Andrew Brouillette (LSU-Shreveport), Jack Lupo (Vanderbilt) and Matt Borgschulte (Western Kentucky) recorded consecutive two-out singles to load the bases for Amann. After working the count to 2-1, Amann laced a bases-clearing triple to right-center to give the Outlaws an 8-6 lead.
Quincy pulled within a run of tying the game in the fourth when Steve Fernandez’s two-out double allowed Zach Kometani to score from second, making it an 8-7 game.
With a slim 8-7 lead, the Outlaws would break the game open in the fourth, scoring four runs on just two hits while taking advantage of three walks, two wild pitches, one passed ball and a hit-by-pitch to go up 12-7.
Amann, Lupo and Joyce led the 11-hit Nashville attack with two hits apiece while Ryan McCauley (Niagara), Brouillette and Amann all had multiple-RBI games.
Steven Murray earned his second win of the summer, allowing one run on two hits in two innings of middle relief.
Kevin Crumb (Buffalo) lowered his ERA to 0.82 after throwing three innings of one-hit relief while Jon Ivie (Belmont) allowed one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts in the final two innings. Ivie has been terrific out of the bullpen this summer, throwing 17.1 innings of scoreless relief including a Prospect League high seven saves.
With the 12-9 win Tuesday, the Outlaws clinched the two-game series over the Gems and returned to .500 on the season with an overall record of 19-19, including 5-5 in the second half. The Outlaws are now just 2 games out of first-place in the Central Division.
The loss drops the Gems to 23-17 overall and 7-5 in the second half of the season.
Nashville will be off Wednesday, before returning to the friendly confines of Hawkins Field on Thursday for what will be the start of five straight games in five days at home.
The Outlaws will host the West Virginia Miners for three games starting on Thursday (7:05 p.m. start) before hosting Terre Haute for two games on Sunday and Monday.

Outlaws Crush Quincy, 9-1

The Nashville Outlaws took advantage of a costly two-out error in the sixth inning as they broke open a 3-1 game by scoring five unearned runs in the inning en route to a 9-1 win over the Quincy Gems at Hawkins Field Monday.
With the win, Nashville improves to 4-5 in the second half of the season, while the loss drops Quincy to 7-4.
Navery Moore (2-2) showed why he was selected as a Prospect League All-Star this summer, allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings of work. Moore, who will be a junior next fall at Vanderbilt University, struck out six, walked two and hit a pair while throwing 56 of his 89 pitches for strikes. Moore was able to work his way out of trouble in a few timely situations during the game thanks to a mid-to-low 90s fastball and sharp curveball.

After Quincy got on the board with a rune of their own in the top of the fourth, the game got out of hand in the sixth when the Outlaws made the Gems pay for a costly-two-out fielding error that led to five unearned Nashville runs.
Bryan Johns (Vanderbilt) led the Outlaws with three hits and two runs scored on Monday while Kevin Smith (LSU-Shreveport) drove in a team four runs, including a two-out bases clearing double to deep right in what was part of the five-run sixth. Heading into tomorrow, Smith's .357 batting average ranks second in the Prospect League.
Greg Bachman (Austin Peay) and Sam Dove (Georgia Tech) each collected two hits apiece while scoring a run. Drew Fann (Vanderbilt) went 1-for-1 with three walks and a run scored to raise his average to .273. Fann is hitting .556 (5-for-9) over his last three games.
Nashville will host Quincy again on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m., at Hawkins Field. Tuesday’s game marks game two of what is a seven-game homestand for the Outlaws.

Nashville falls to Quincy, 10-4

QUINCY, Ill. – A day after jumping out to a 7-0 lead over Quincy, Nashville fell behind 6-0 after three innings as the Gems went on to defeat the Outlaws 10-4 at QU-Stadium on Tuesday night.
Sam Dove (Georgia Tech) and Ryan McCauley (Niagara) continued to swing a hot bat Tuesday as they both went 2-for-4 to lead the Nashville offense. McCauley is hitting .643 (9-for-14) in his last four games, including a season-best 4-for-4 effort against the Gems on Monday.
Quincy (11-10) finished the game with 10 runs on 10 hits while Nashville scored four runs on nine hits. The Outlaws had ample opportunities to score more runs Wednesday as they left 12 runners on base and Quincy committed four errors in the field.
Jared Fancher (TCU) led off the fifth-inning with a solo home run to cut into Quincy’s five-run lead. The home run was Fancher’s first of the season.
Nashville starting pitcher Andy Hillis (Tennessee) allowed eight runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings.
Matt Marsh (Austin Peay) allowed two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief while Matt Fitton (Sacred Heart) struck out one and walked one in a scoreless inning of relief.
Nashville (10-12) will travel to Springfield, Ill., tomorrow to face the Springfield Sliders Wednesday night at Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders (14-7) currently lead the Prospect League Western Division and enter tomorrow’s game against the Outlaws winners of four of their last five games. The Sliders split a doubleheader with Hannibal on Tuesday night.
The Outlaws will return home to the Music City on Thursday, July 1st for a start of what will be a seven-game homestand at Hawkins Field.
Thursday’s game against the Dubois County Bombers will be a doubleheader. The first game will start at 6 p.m., with the second game to follow.
The doubleheader serves as a makeup for the June 17th game against Dubois that was rained out.

Outlaws use long ball to top Gems, 8-2

QUINCY, Ill. – The Nashville Outlaws jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings, thanks to a three-run home run by Sam Dove (Georgia Tech) in the top of the first and got seven shutout innings from starting pitcher Austin Bridgewater to pick up an 8-2 win over Quincy at QU-Stadium on Monday.
With the win, the Outlaws snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 10-11 overall while the loss drops Quincy back to .500 at 10-10.
Nashville showed some patience at the plate on Monday, as they took advantage of eight free passes from Quincy’s pitching staff and made them pay with a pair of multi-run home runs.
Nashville led 7-0 heading into the eighth inning before the Gems could finally get on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning.
Austin Bridgewater (Carson-Newman) won for the second time in his last three starts, tossing seven shutout innings on Monday. Bridgewater scattered only four hits while striking out two in the win.
Ryan McCauley (Niagara) set a franchise record with four hits in the game, including a key two-run home run in the top of the sixth that gave Nashville a 6-0 lead. The long-ball was McCauley’s first of the summer. McCauley has been on a tear as of late, hitting .700 (7-for-10) over his last three games.
